SHOOT YOUR SHOT

"Shoot your shot! Shoot your shot! If you like her; tell her."

Please, stop listening to motivational speakers.

Okay o, that was how innocent me; filled with motivational talks, carried myself and went to ask this fine girl out (me and fine girls shaa). We’ve been around each other for only so long and I decided to follow ‘professional advice.’ After the customary akara and sugarcane talks with plenty laughter, I finally grabbed the mic and presented my manifesto...(I saw you in my dream dressed in all white with a scroll in your hand and you gave it me and said this is the vision I’m here to support you... Khuuuuur! Let me throw up... No! I didn’t say that balablu...) but that was where I spoilt the fun.

Immediately my words left the two sides of my wide mouth, I knew I had hit a rock bottom; the atmosphere instantly became eerie. It felt like they just poured cold water on me and the food I was eating lost every bit of tastiness in it. To make matters worse, Aunty wouldn’t respond for what seemed to me like 100 hours.

Mixed feelings; will my application scale through, will it not, if it did, am I even ready for this? Did I say something wrong, did I say too much? (and yes, I actually said a lot). The questions reeled unending in my head and in those otherwise few seconds, it felt like Hilda Baci waiting for her GWR confirmation. Omo!

Finally Aunty spoke... (I’ve always considered you as my big brother and a spiritual mentor... Nooooo! She didn’t say that either)

Hmm! Dear Motivational Speaker, e be like say this ‘Professional Advice’ don turn ‘Pro-Fake-tional Advice’ o.

Well, before I finish my story, I’ve got this to say.

It’s absolutely beautiful to like someone so much and never think to date them.

There is absolutely too much we can do/get out of a simple friendship relationship (please o, not friends with benefits o). Many great friendships died the moment two good people with good intentions started dating. Just because you spend the most amazing time together, pray together, have the most intelligent conversations; agree even on the most trivia issues of life; all that doesn’t mean a green light for a dating/romantic relationship.

Never trample on an otherwise great friendship in an attempt to take things to the next level. Exhaustively enjoy this present level... Like your candy crush game, make sure you finish this level before going to the next; don't get crushed. (but before you ask me, let me ask you; how do you know it’s time to graduate from friendship?)

Meanwhile, I’m not just talking about averting the possibility of you getting a No! A Dating/Romantic relationship many times cloud our sanity, drives us to the edge of the adventure and destroys every real sense of goodness that might have existed if two great people were just friends.

And if you are like me who will quickly start imagining marriage when they are with a great person; please suffocate that imagination before it chokes you...

Finally, here is me saying love will happen when love will happen; it has a mind of its own. Most times, it is preceded by an accident. If we have to plan it and talk about it before it starts then it may not be love in the first place.

CAVEAT: No one script fits all.

Obviously, we won’t all be single forever; however, for a child of God, except you want to put yourself in the frontlines of compromise where the battle is more fierce, it is safer to stay single until you are led by God’s righteous spirit when the time is due...

Now back to my story; you still want to hear what Aunty told me? Long story short; I’VE BEEN GHOSTED!

I didn’t cry o... Not a single tear (in Brother John’s Voice)
